L. Hi Fabrizio, what does interest you the most in photography?

F. I’ve started to take pictures when I’ve ended my educational path in Film Direction. After that, I’ve got the chance to realize a feature movie on which I’ve worked for more than two years. But things sometimes go wrong. The entire project was sold for “production issues”. In an industry like the movie industry, producing something implies to be involved in a process where you strictly depend from a system, even and mostly in terms of funds (human and economic resources). In a movie industry, funds and ideas are not independent. After those three years I remained with nothing in my hands, just paper and ideas. What still remained was the urgency to narrate. So I’ve translated this urgency in a different system where you can be independent. This is photography to me: the answer to an urgency.

L. What’s your main influence? Did anyone or something inspire you in order to create your own style?

F. I don’t know exactly. For sure American photography has influenced me a lot. I believe in genres. Same thing you find for movies. You can narrate different stories by using various kindsof approach. Each story has its language that can vary every single time. “The Mecca of Coney Island” has a certain language and a specific technique; “Diary of an Italian Borderworker” is based on a citation of the american cliché that is close to the atmosphere of the Piano di Magadino zone (part of Canton Ticino, the area where the entire project was shot); my ongoing project is again another kind of approach even in terms of gaze and techniques. If we compare them, these three projects are very different from one another, and I like this type of incoherence.
