Cynthia Luehr was born and raised in Germany and started full-time modelling at a young age. Inspired by the fashion work she has been living in cities such as Los Angeles, Mexico City, Milan, Istanbul, and among others. While returning back to Berlin and working for a design & communication agency, her deep involvement in the concepts and art direction of photo shoots increased to the point where she decided to take the camera into her own hands. Attending Elisava, the School of Photography and Design in Barcelona, Cynthia experimented with photography and honed her skills as a freelance art director.
As an emerging photographer, she focuses on documentary and fashion photography. While in her documentary projects, she comes close to the subject of research, posing substantial questions and probing the outcome through analysis and visualization of her chosen theme, her fashion and portrait photographs have an aesthetic of natural beauty. Oen taking place in rural environments, Cynthia’s relaxed and lyrical approaches create images of genius ease and spontaneity.
About Saudade, a journey we call “home” – words by Cynthia Luehr:
I come from a small town in West Germany. Where I grew up, people stay in the same place they were born and raised; around their mid-twenties, they meet someone, get married and have kids. If you ask them what home is, they will answer you, it is the family, the house, the city they come from. But then home is something else for other people—those who do not feel meaningfully connected to the place they were born.
In considering what “home” means for myself, what a liberating place is, where I can reinvent myself and become the one I have always wanted to be, I came to the profound consideration of what “home” may be for others. In ARRIVAL, I portrayed different people from different backgrounds —there were those who le their land by choice and those fled by force. I asked them to write down what their sense of belonging is.
