Issue 8 Memory has been released officially on 15th July. Yesterday we pushed it and spread the news all over our social profiles, but there is one thing still missing: the words of the director of C41 Magazine, Luca A. Caizzi. You know, the best always comes at last. We saved these for this article, which is the official presentation of C41 about the 8th publication of our magazine, the first one of 2019. We are already looking forward to the issue 9 and 10, and those are going to be special, but in the meantime don’t think about the future, stick to the present and enjoy this beautiful letter that perfectly resume the meaning of “Memory” for us.

The eighth theme of C41 is Memory. It might seem a play on words, a way to alter the language, but the association of C41 with Memory is a fact, it is maths, a number, like the number 8 that on this July 8th 2019 marks another small finish line for us. The process of choosing this theme happened organically, without too many meetings, by simply observing the contemporary context, just like we have been trying to do for the past 10 years. It is not an easy task to mirror: you find yourself living in a present that does not exist, projecting an online flow to the future, and the paper pages to the past; every six months a new folder and a number appear on our desktops. This folder becomes home to our inspirations, to everything we find visually captivating, without any constrictions, without any prejudice. These folders are better than any advertisement mood-boards, better than all of the favorites saved in our browsers (and yours too), better than Artsy newsletters and better than any column on Complex.
Photographs and stories. Memories. A folder that lives and develops slowly compared to the digital speed that we are now so used to. This folder gets filled with words only when we really have something to add, stories that have been discussed, approved, rejected, and it will be printed when the moment feels right and we are sure that its content belongs on the shelves and to history. They say leafing through pages is better than tapping a screen. It is healthier for your brain and can help you to remember.
Today may be just another day for you all, but it is not: C41 has printed its 8th folder, we created something tangible that will live through time and will forever represent a piece of memory.

L’ottavo tema di C41 è Memoria. Può sembrare un gioco di parole, un modo per alterare la lingua, invece l’associazione di C41 e Memoria è un dato di fatto, è matematica, un numero, come il numero 8 che segna in questo Luglio 2019 un altro piccolo traguardo per noi.
Siamo arrivati alla scelta di questo tema in maniera organica, senza troppe riunioni, ma semplicemente osservando il contemporaneo, così come cerchiamo di fare da quasi dieci anni. Rifletterlo non è cosa facile: ti ritrovi a vivere un presente che non esiste, proiettando il flusso dell’online al futuro, le pagine del cartaceo al passato più prossimo e ogni sei mesi sui nostri computer apriamo una nuova cartella rinominandola con un numero. Dentro ci inseriamo tutto quello che ci piace visivamente, senza alcuna costrizione, senza nessun pregiudizio. Queste cartelle sono meglio di qualsiasi moodboard pubblicitaria, meglio di tutti i nostri (e vostri) preferiti del browser, meglio delle newsletter di Artsy e delle rubriche di Complex. Fotografie e storie. Memorie. Una cartella che vive e cresce lentamente rispetto al digital a cui siamo abituati, che si riempie di parole solamente quando abbiamo davvero qualcosa da aggiungere, di storie che vengono discusse, approvate, scartate e che viene stampata solamente quando è il momento giusto e sentiamo che ha il peso che si merita sugli scaffali e nella storia. Sfogliare dicono sia meglio di fare tap su uno schermo, di “tap-pare”. Dicono che faccia bene al cervello e che aiuti a ricordare meglio.
Per voi oggi potrà sembrare un giorno come tanti, ma non è vero: C41 ha stampato la sua ottava cartella, ha prodotto qualcosa di fisico che resterà nel tempo e che potrà permettergli di non farsi dimenticare mai più.
